Intro
Fortunate to have modest-sized feet [for a gentleman], women's size 10 / 11 fit me wonderfully well. So, I can buy them right 'off the rack.' Over time, I have come to enjoy shoe-shopping...

Usually [being a CD], I will wear androgynous apparel - tailored trousers - career blouse - but with no jewelry/wig/makeup so no attempt to 'pass.' Appearing like a fashion-conscious urban European GQ kind of dude...The slacks are the most important item...

Low-hemmed, wide-legged black dressy trousers are perfect because one can wear almost any style of shoe or boot with them and enjoy the pleasure of one's current favorite pair without attracting undue attention.

When standing still in an upscale mall, for example, my heels are largely hidden by my trousers with just a hint of the toe and a glimmer of the heel. However, as I take each step, the trouser legs sway to reveal a brief glimpse of the whole shoe...a pleasure to see reflected as one passes by shop windows. Of course, the ocassional passer-by will take a second look but be too polite to make it obvious and often, fashion-conscious women [and a few men] will smile almost as if a knowing grin, a wink of good-hearted recognition that yes, this gentleman is wearing ladies' footwear...

Shopping
Then, entering an upscale department store or an Ann Taylor's or Talbots or similar better-label shop, the sales ladies - being fashion-aware - will quickly, automatically scan one and, of course, recognize one's cute flats or block heel loafers or career pumps - and worn as they are with tasteful trousers and blouse - you know you are signalling your inclinations and you are being 'read' so they are prepared for your selections with a smile or a grin...

Once, at a low-end department store, a saleslady seemed nervous about my trying on women's shoes - that was the only time in hundreds of experiences when I haven't felt welcomed even encouraged.

A Little More 'Dressy?'
Usually, I will first ask to try on a 'tame' women's shoe such as an androgynous loafer or clog or sandal [I always wear black or nude knne-hi's or stockings or pantyhose as, other than barefoot, that's the most delightful and appropriate way to wear femme fancies].

Anyway, then, once i've slipped on both loafers, for example, and walked around, I often ask if 'they' can suggest...'something a little dressier.'..or...'more like a tuxedo pump'...or...'with a touch of a heel'...or...'like this one [pointing to a more overtly feminine style]...or, if the sales lady seems comfortable...'I'm also looking for something that would go with a skirt / dress / skirted suit'...or...'that has a higher heel or gold trim or is like this style....or...like the one's you're wearing'...

Arms Full of Shoes
Often, the sales lady will emerge from the stock room with three or four selections of her own for me to try on and, of course, as I model them for her, I solicit and receive her candid opinion. If there are other customers coming and going, it doesn't seem to matter.

High Heeled Times
I've had so many wonderful experiences - even in two situations trying on the sales lady's own shoes! - and great candid conversations about being like Imelda Marcos and often, our shared weakness for shoes. I have even received sincere compliments for being 'brave' and 'self confident' and on a few ocassions, been told quite sincerely, that a pair of shoes or my 'outfit' looked awesome on me.

Flattery in Heels
Once in an Ann Taylor store, after I had come out of the dressing room wearing a black, back zip career dress, black opaque stockings and black high heels with tapered toes, my sales lady cooed and called over the two others and as she had me turn and pose, kept remarking how the dress looked better on me than on anyone else who'd modeled it and how her choice of heels looked 'stunning' with the dress - she gave me a generous discount and we talked candidly then, and subsequent times, about shoes and clothes and how cool it was that I was brave enough to wear the clothes I love.

Anyway, for those of you intimidated, don't be. My only concern is having a friend or neighbor see me en femme so I travel / shop where I'm anonymous.

I'm posting this as a thread to encourage others to share shoe shopping stories and tips. Thanks.

This was a wonderful post and brought back many memories of my shoe shopping experiences. I have been shoe shopping for over 15 years now and have never had a "bad" experience. Like you, I am very fortunate in that I wear a ladies size 10 quite comfortably. Although I have not gone quite as far as to wear feminine clothing when shopping, I typically wear nice slacks or boot cut jeans to shop in.

I too have been complimented many times on my ability to walk comfortably in higher heels. The story I usually give is that I need a pair of "slutty" looking heels to wear because I am doing a skit at ourcompany sales meeting and I need to appear as a prostitute. I tell the clerk that I wear a size 9 in mens and could they determine the correct size in womens for me. They get quite a charge out of helping me find just the right pair, but are usually so shocked that I can walk in 4-5 inch pumps with ease.

Another story that I have tried is that my chiropractor has me stand with my heels on a raised board for long periods of time to relieve lower back pain. It ocurred to me that a pair of higher heeled shoes could accomplish the same mission and I wouldn't be stuck in one place with my heels on a board. Then I tell the clerk that the board is at least 4 inches high and could she find me a pair of shoes to match that height. It is unbelievable that they bring out these very high stiletto heels and fall for the story that wearing them can help lower back pain.

In the self service stores, such as Burlington or Ross, I have helped myself to a pair of pumps and wandered the store in them as if I'm trying them out. It's always interesting to see the reaction from other customers in the store.

In conclusion, most of the women who help me with shoe shopping are impressed that I am not shy and that I'm willing to go to such efforts to try on heels.

Thanks for your wonderful, fascinating post re your shoe shopping. I compliment you on your imaginative reasons for wanting to purchase femme footwear. You reminded me of others I've used...

"...I find I get a better fit in a woman's last..."

"...I tried on my girlfriend's and she thinks they look cool on me..."

"...I'm in a skit and am playing a woman and need shoes like these..." [classic!]

"...I'm going to a masquerade party in drag and need a pair of heels like these to go with my costume..." [classic, failsafe, although it seems extravagant to be considering purchasing an $80 pair of stylish heels just for a one-night, funky party...]

"...I just really like these..." [braveheart!]

"...Would you have these in a size to fit me?" [as if, of course, they will be for you...]

Not saying anything at all - but walking in wearing some clearly feminine style of footwear - browsing as if the most normal shopping experience - and, when asked if one wants assistance {and, of course, as the person making the inquiry is focused on shoes and selling them, she has already 'read' your cute 'girlie' shoes...} - hold the sample shoe and ask if they have it in one's size. [This natural, honest approach, as if one is just a typical, confident customer of heels and such, is now my preferred - the response, almost always very encouraging, allows one to enjoy the entire high of the experience and establishes a knowing sales person ready to serve future visits.]

Gentlemen intimidated by shopping for shoes - unless they try to do it where they are apt to be recognized - have nothing to be intimidated about and everything wonderful to anticipate. Imagine spending - as I have - an hour trying on numerous styles and having animated conversations with warm sales ladies... The worst that can happen is encountering a nervous sales lady...and even then, you will still have the opportunity to try and buy.

Remember, increasingly, stores, especially mall and better department stores have policies in place to avoid 'discrimination' based on gender /sexual preference / GLBT...

Also, sales people want to make sales...that's their raison d'etre ...and the best of them love what they sell...so why would they be overly concerned selling a ladies' shoe intended for a gentleman's foot?

The best of femme footwear sales people share at least a touch of the same passion as those of us who are mesmerized by heels and such...often sales ladies, in particular, will spontaneously initiate discussions about their love of shoes and favorite styles or shoes in the shop they've just possessed or covet...with a wonderful grin...

I love wearing feminine footwear of all styles and heel heights out in safely anonymous 'public' places.

I do get a thrilling shiver sensing or seeing a gaggle of teenage girls look twice and giggle or a well-dressed woman do a second take and, sometimes, catching my eye, smile knowingly, or wink in playful recognition, or, the gentleman who looks with fascination - or envy - and who will once in a while walk up, sincerely compliment me on my choice of footwear and ask where I found them {this latter case can lead in surprising directions...]

Upscale malls are among my favorites and what better reason to browse and walk in one's adored pumps [which is such a high!] than in pursuit of cute new shoes?

Other experiences?
