im wondering when a preference becomes a fetish, maybe someone can help me out here?
ive been reading the advice given to a new member wanting to aquire the shoes of a friend and it makes me wonder how prefering women wearing suspenders can be compared with having a shoe fetish. is the term fetish being misused in this instance or is wearing sexy underclothes, stockings etc a fetish also??
does the term only apply if it is men wearing the stockings and suspenders?

I count myself as a true shoe fetishist, i knew i liked shoes from a very early age at primary school and i have never stopped loving them. From flats to 6 inch heels, from boots to trainers i will confess to likeing nearly all styles, with just a few exceptions.
someone who likes shoes as part of there sex life is maybe just showing a preferance as most of us do for sexy underwear, stockings etc.
My fetish is with me 24 hours a day and maybe thats the real differance. I can only comment as it affects me i guess, and i'm sure others will have there own ideas too.
it would be really interesting to know how women view it too, do women have a real shoe sex fetish or just a fetish for fashionable shoes. Do you like shoes and boots for yourselves or because of the effect they and you can have have on the man in your life?
Does a pair of 6 inch heels really turn a women on or is it the effect they clearly have on guys, i'm sure there not being worn for the comfy style LOL

a true fetish seems to be something that is hidden deep inside for fear of being misunderstood, the fetishist is ashamed of it maybe or embarrassed?
definately afraid of being discovered for the most part, which is maybe why this site is so loved as it is a haven where you can be yourself. a place where you are accepted and dont have to hide....?

that certainly strikes a cord with me, It is deep inside and somthing i can do nothing about even if i wanted too, it was such a big secret through most of my life but i found an amazing women to share it with and who now is as open to it as i could have dreamed of.
I dont think all fetishists are really so secretive of it but it does seem that lots of us are. Not the sort of thing you use for a chat up line or drop into your chats with your mates maybe LOL

In order to determine the relative prevalences of different types of fetishes, scientists obtained a sample of at least 5000 individuals worldwide from 381 Internet discussion groups. The relative prevalences were estimated based on (a) the number of groups devoted to a particular fetish, (b) the number of individuals participating in the groups and (c) the number of messages exchanged. Using these measures, feet and shoes were found to be the most common target of preferences. given by myself and my boyfriend is because someone was ashamed or embarassed about their "fetish" despite the fact the person did not dicate wanting someones shoes as they have a "fetish". You assume they have as that is why they are here.
Preference is obviously different to fetish as im sure many people would say they "prefer" women in heels than flats, but dont have a desire for it or fetish as such? I would have thought that to be self explanatory?
Also, shoe fetish was not "Compared" to stockings/suspenders in any way but stated to be the 2nd most common desire/fetish of males after S & S. Therefore not a comparison, but a researched and publicised finding. It was also not compared when stating if the member had a S&S "fetish" or bathing suit "fetish" they would not be so embarassed about it becase this is widely discussed and acknowledged by males as it is so common, where shoes being the 2nd most common fetish is never really discussed amongst groups of male friends on nights out etc.
So the term fetish was not used incorrectly "in this instance".
With regards to your question of "is wearing sexy underclothes, stockings etc a fetish also??" that all depends on the individual doesnt it. I certainly know from my BF's friends comments that nearly all males I know "prefer" heels on women but they arnt really bothered about it. Therefore if you are one of the harcore who consider it a necessity or collect them/play with them in private then I would say that dicates a fetish more than a preference. With regards to whether S&S applies to being a fetish again then I would say yes depending on the person - and no, not only to men wearing it. A lot of males or females would "prefer" ladies in it - to be honest i dont know too many guys who dont, but they dont worship or neccesitate it so therefore wouldnt really be considered a fetish. Likewise with shoes, if you are someone who worships to a high degree, neccesitates and thinks of nothing more than S&S then it can be considered a fetish.
But then - it opens the whole can of worms as to what "fetish" means to each person. Just as your interpretation above of the term fetish is totally different to what I/we condider a fetish to be but that doesnt mean your interpretation is incorrect "in this instance" it simply means we all have different opinions.
Despite what wikipedia or the english dictionary states, people seem to have their own opinions of what most words in the English language mean, and fetish is certainly no exception.
I must have edited this post about 30 times so it doesnt come across to rude or angry, and just took out a whole paragraph due to this. It is frustrating when anything you write on this site gets pulled to pieces by people, but thats the nature of the net I guess.
It is is more frustrating however when people question articles when they have been missinterpreted or misread, as in this instance. As I was careful not to Compare any fetish to another, as that is a timebomb waiting to go off. So to question whether my/our post(s) was correct to compare sussies to shoe fetish was incorrect as there was no comparison done by ourselves if you read the artice again carefully. I/we simply stated if someone had one of the common of socially discussed fetishes then that person probably wouldnt be embarassed. Likewise if anyone sees Bravo etc late at night, I've lost count of the amount of programmes on Fetishes and S&S is always number one. Feet and shoes are often combines and always near the top, but seldom discussed or admitted by males.
I would have welcomed your question personally and if we had differing opinions then of course ask the site. But asking the site making me/us out to look innacurrate with comparisons we never made I don't think is entirely fair.

Wow good conversation here. Well I sadly don't have thoughts on it that are that deep. I 'm not even sure what to consider myself. I do have a shoe fetish and I like to dress up but that part is more fun for me then it is sexual. I do like wearing heels I say. I like the way they make me feel sometimes when I wear them. Sometimes its a sexual thing, sometimes its just me wearing the heels because I think they're cool and go well with what I'm wearing. So I'm not sure if that we be a preference thing or not. I try not think about it to much and just treat it as a "bedroom hobby". I will say even though I wear heels I would much rather seem them on women. It just that I'm too way way way to shy to go up to someone I like and say hi. So maybe it kind of ties into that who knows.

i do realise that things i comment on are usually taken out of context and blown out of all proportion by certain members.
that said... the comments i had read on another forum got me thinking, which is why i started this thread... because it got ME thinking, NOT because i was disputing what anyone said...
apart from that... this is a very informative thread and im glad i started it. i dont really care what wilkepedia says, or how many documented cases there are of this that and the other... i was asking on a personal level, any member who cared to answer me, what they thought... and keep the thoughts comin...

Sometimes members pick out comments of others posts looking for an axe to grind.Given the discounted efforts in reading email or digital writings these days this is a common occurance, an especially here on a sex site.
Many people write things in email they would never have the courage to say in peron. Normally that means they should think twice before they hit send. Now if I wish to read into the thread and post what I read as interesting Wipedia info and note some comments you also should just read or skip what you want and move on. Seems to be a sore point to you that your in some manner saying others are doing to your thread. Anyway my post did have some insight to your intial ? on the term itself. if you look again. If no,t its not a big deal. And I see you just meant to share personal insights and I get that. I just think if you have this sexual fetish as I certainly do, it offers some insight to see maybe how the so called medical community defines the terms, just as a base point.
