Prime hunting grounds for shoephiles |

So, Where I live is not the hotspot for shoe watching and buying. The Southwest U.S. is brutal on feet, and the footwear here reflects that. But, I have found that, in my travels to Tokyo, Japan, there is a vast and massive appreciation for all sorts of sexy footwear. Landing in Narita and taking the train into Tokyo, I saw loads of women in heels and HH boots. The shops in Ueno, Akihabara, and the swapmeet district of Ameyako were great places to watch (and buy) all sorts of high heels. Shibuya and Shinjuku would drive the heelnut bonkers as they are THE fashion shopping hub for trendy young Japanese ladies. The selection of footwear available at the stores blew my mind. Japanese women still dress very femininely (is that a word?) and it's a treat to see ladies in high heeled boots strutting up and down the stairs that seem to lead everywhere in Tokyo. I heartilly reccomend a trip there if you've the $$ and ability. It's a shoe heaven there.

Nice hint, Pumpgroover. You did not mention they leave shoes outdoors to enter home. It seems a pretty good opportunity to play with shoes.
BTW, what would be brutal footwear in southwest USA?

Shoephile does seem a bit clinical, whatever works for the individual, I suppose. Shoe lover does sound better! Shoes are not often left outside, per se, in Japan, In each home inside the front door, there is a small porch, just a few feet square, below the living floor of the home where often-worn (daily wear) shoes are left and one changes into house slippers or socks to wear about the home. Dress shoes are kept boxed usually, and are put away until such time as they are needed. As most Tokyo-folks are apartment dwellers, one goes out to entertain. Often to large multi-storied restaurants, where most folks dress nicely, and for the shoewatcher, the ladies almost always wear their best. Some such places require that one leave their shoes at the door (in compartmentalised shelves) and proceed inside in stocking feet.... great places for the female foot lover!

In town (Tucson) flip flops are often worn, but for far-flung folks like me, leaving home in less than hightop "Chucks" or full combat boots would be unthinkable! With spiders, scorpions, snakes, and all manner of foot hateful plant-life, feet can and do suffer for the unprepared! I still see the occaisional heel at clubs and such, but sandals seem to predominate the street scene.
